A market defines a question about a sporting event. Read the selection, period, line and exceptions together. The examples below explain common conventions, not AFB or SABA product terms.
1X2: home, draw or away
In common football notation, 1 means a home-team win, X a draw and 2 an away-team win for the specified period. A “to qualify” market asks a different question from a normal-time result.
Hypothetical example: the score is 1–1 after normal time and the home side later advances. The normal-time result is still a draw. Always read which period the actual market covers.
Handicaps adjust the comparison
A handicap applies an adjustment to a score for settlement. Under the common two-way Asian-handicap convention, a whole-number adjusted tie is a push, returning that portion of the stake. A three-way handicap market instead includes a draw selection; do not confuse the two.
Hypothetical examples using that two-way convention:
| Selection | Score (home–away) | Illustrative reading |
|---|---|---|
| Home −1 | 2–1 | Adjusted 1–1: push. |
| Home −0.5 | 1–1 | Adjusted 0.5–1: loss. |
| Home −0.25 | 1–1 | Half at 0 pushes; half at −0.5 loses. |
Totals count goals rather than the winner
A total-goal market compares the counted goals with a line. In a hypothetical 2–1 match, the total is three goals: over 2.5 is above the line, while under 2.5 is below it. This says nothing about the probability of a future match.
Whole and quarter lines need additional reading. At a whole line, a tie may return the stake under the applicable convention; a quarter line splits the stake across adjacent lines. Verify the product’s own explanation and the goals and period included.
The rulebook controls the real settlement
Betfair’s football rules provide a concrete example of an operator defining these conditions. They are not universal terms and are not AFB or SABA rules. No odds, account links or outcome recommendations are provided here.
- Check normal time versus extra time and shoot-outs.
- Read interruption, postponement and abandonment conditions.
- Check whether live-market score adjustments differ from pre-match ones.
Questions, answered
Is a quarter handicap a new kind of match score?
No. Under the convention illustrated here, it splits a stake between two adjacent handicap lines. It does not change the score on the pitch.
Does understanding the terms guarantee a win?
No. Understanding a definition helps interpretation. It does not predict an event or guarantee a financial result.
